What is the Ryder Cup?

The Ryder Cup is more about the game than about the money. The first game began in 1927, and the idea was to pit the best golf players from American and Great Britain in a match unequaled in golf history. Named after Samuel Ryder, whose home was in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England; he was a businessman who eventually became Mayor of St. Albans. He sponsored several tournaments and went on to donate a gold cup that was later to be known as the Ryder Cup. Since its inception, the Rival Cup event took place every year. However, after the 9-11 attack, the Ryder Cup was rescheduled and now takes place on even numbered years.
