This is one of those confusing games in which both teams did not make many additions or subtractions in the offseason. Pittsburgh has quarterback with few question marks. While Tennessee has a young quarterback who must step up this season in order to keep his job. The Titans have a running back who was once considered the best in the NFL. Pittsburgh has a committee of running backs that are largely unproven.
Tennessee has many question marks and none are bigger than Locker. While you don’t want to take too much out of a preseason, however he was not impressive and if he doesn’t play well in the early weeks he may hear the footsteps of backup Ryan Fitzpatrick. Kenny Brit is the biggest threat they have at WR and he has been plagued by immaturity both on and off the field for the majority of his young career. He has the potential to be a big play threat and combine with Locker to become one of the best QB/RB combinations in the league. It’s also possible that he could continue on his negative path and find himself out of the league in a few years. RB Chris Johnson did rush for over 1200 yards last season, however in comparison to the monster seasons he put up in previous years that was a down season. He held out at the beginning of last season costing him training camp and never really got on track. He remains one of the best big play breakers in the league and after having a full training camp is a candidate for a big season.
The Steelers have made many subtractions from their roster for the last few seasons without replacing them with free agents. They have instead chosen to build through the draft and surround Ben Roethlisberger with young/unproven players. Roethlisberger will need to exhibit leadership skills beyond what he has shown previously. He is a 2 time superbowl championship quarterback and he will need to share that wisdom and experience with his new teammates. Emmanuel Sanders will assume the role as the number 1 receiver in the offense. He has the size, speed, and ability to make it work and could provide Roethlisberger with the target he needs on the outside. Issac Redman has been named the starter at Running Back after a strong preseason performance. He will be asked to be the lead back in an offense that has always been a running time before and during the tenure of head coach Mike Tomlin.
If Johnson and Locker play at the top of their games then it is possible for the Titans to pull of this upset. All eyes will be on Redman and the young receivers to see if Pittsburgh has enough offense to be a Superbowl contender.
