2013 NFL Week 2 - Lions vs. Cardinals Betting Odds Preview

Line: Lions -1

Since Matthew Stafford has become the starting quarterback for the Detroit Lions they have relied upon a passing game that took shots down the field frequently. The addition of running back Reggie Bush is not exactly going to change that as he is not a traditional “between the tackles” tailback. However based on his performance in week 1 he provides them with a lethal threat out of the backfield. When the game was over he had over 100 yards receiving as well as 90 yards rushing. He may end up being the biggest free agent acquisition this off-season. The Arizona Cardinals have had major issues at quarterback ever since the retirement of Kurt Warner. After week one it appears that they have finally found the answer in new quarterback Carson Palmer. He went 26-40 for 327 yards in an impressive debut. It appears as if both teams are going to take big steps forward with the help of their new players.

The Cardinals blew a double-digit lead going into the fourth quarter in week 1 against The Rams. This despite a strong performance from wide receiver Andre Roberts who had 8 catches for 97 yards. As well as a strong Cardinal debut for Rashard Mendenhall who had 16 carries for 60 yards but looked stronger as the game went on. The loss means that there is work to be done, however the play of the offense through 3 quarters was encouraging and the fact that they now have a quarterback capable of getting the ball to Larry Fitzgerald is a great sign moving forward. Fitzgerald had a touchdown catch on the opening drive as well as a grab late in the 3rd quarter for his second touchdown of the day. The key will be if they can make the defensive adjustments necessary to make sure they would not be blowing any leads in the future. .

The Lions are looking like one of the best offensive teams in the NFL. Stafford has never had so many weapons at his disposal. Nate Burelson had had 6 catches for 78 yards. Lost in the mix of their week one performance is that they received virtually nothing from All Pro wide receiver Calvin Johnson. This is an example of the depth the team now has. This depth also allowed them to overcome several turnovers and mental errors along the way. This team is an offensive machine that is fully capable of scoring 50 + points on any given Sunday. The game featured another penalty on Ndamukong Suh who had an illegal hit. Fortunately for the Lions he was fined ($100.000) however he was not suspended.

This one should be a high scoring football game. Both teams have the ability to air it out as well as get players involved in the short passing game. The winning team will be the one that has their defense step up and make plays.

Pick: Cardinals +1
