Line: 49ers -6.5

The Texans head into week 5 coming off one of the most disappointing losses in team history. They were unable to hold onto a 4th quarter lead after dominating for most of the game. They faced a 3rd and long with 2 and a half minutes remaining on Sunday and a bootleg was called for quarterback Matt Schaub to roll out. Unfortunately for Schaub he was immediately pressured and instead of holding onto the ball and just taking the sack he attempted to complete the pass and it was easily intercepted by Richard Sherman and it was taken back for a game tying touchdown. They continued their follies by committing penalties in overtime and they lost the game by a field goal. The 49ers are a disappointing 2-2 and are coming off a win over the Rams last Thursday night so they should be well rested come game time. Both teams are at 500 and have underachieved thus far; both will be looking to get on track Sunday night.

The 49ers returned to their roots during the Jim Harbaugh era and had a dominant performance on the defensive side of the ball. They held Sam Bradford to a measly 202 yards passing on 41 passes while sacking him 5 times. They completely eliminating the running game for the Rams holding running back Daryl Richardson to 16 yards on 12 carries. The 188 total yards marked the best performance for the 49ers defense this season. On offense Colin Kaepernick didn’t turn the ball over for the first time in weeks and threw for 2 touchdowns. Running back Frank Gore had his breakout game of the season with 20 carries for 153 yards and a touchdown. Backup Kendall Hunter contributed with 49 yards on 11 carries in the overall team win.

The Texans had everything going for them through 3 quarters on Sunday. They had a 2 touchdown lead over an undefeated team and life couldn’t be better. About an hour later they had lost the game and were 2-2 as opposed to 3-1. The biggest impact on this game early on was the reemergence of all pro tailback Arian Foster who rushed for 102 yards on 27 carries after splitting carries with Ben Tate over the seasons first few weeks. Foster also had a receiving touchdown while Andre Johnson had a typical day at the office with 9 catches for 110 yards. All of these positives were outweighed by an ugly 4th quarter where a combination of poor play, poor execution, and even worse play calling lead to their ultimate demise. Opportunities will be difficult to come by against this strong 49er defense.

This will be an interesting game and in the end one team will be 2-3 with an uphill battle to make the playoffs. The other will be 3-2 and have the chance at a playoff run

Pick: 49ers -6.5
