2013 NFL Week 6 - Steelers vs Jets Betting Odds Preview
The Jets have been the biggest positive surprise in the NFL this season. They went into Atlanta on Monday night as 10-point underdogs. Falcons quarterback had never lost back-to-back games at home in his professional career. The Jets were without top wide receiver Santonio Holmes and had a wide variety of injuries and reasons to be such big underdogs. They were impressive on their opening drive and never looked back. Late in the game the Falcons managed to score touchdowns on consecutive drives to gain a brief lead with only a few minutes remaining. The Jets quickly drove the field and were able to get a last second field goal for the win. Pittsburgh had a bye week in week 5 and will be looking to rebound from their awful 0-4 start in which they have been one of the worst offensive teams in the NFL.
The bye week came at a great time for Pittsburgh. Their defensive unit is older and logic would dictate that they could be the problem, however that has not been the case. The defense has performed rather well and has certainly given the offense more than enough chances to win all of their games thus far. The offense has been the Steelers main problem so far this season. With Hines Ward and Plaxico Burress no longer with the team they have no proven threat at wide receiver, forcing Ben Roethlisberger to break in a new batch of young wide receivers in an offense that looks increasingly uncomfortable in. Ben abilities to make plays with his legs as well as throwing the ball down field are limited by the short passing attack designed in this offense. It is likely that the Steelers made many adjustments during the bye week and it will be interesting to see how effective these changes are.
The Jets are starting to show people that the selection of Geno Smith in the second round may be the biggest steal in the draft. He was magnificent on Monday Night, making plays with his legs to get first downs and extend drives. More importantly he showed the ability to take what the defense gave him and complete each pass to open receivers. He threw 3 touchdowns passes and did not throw an interception. He was at his best on the game winning field goal drive where he completed 3 passes that all went for first downs and moved the tem up the field. Once they were on the fringe of field goal range, he audibled to a running play that gained enough yards to put them in comfortable field goal range and the Jets were able to win the game.
In the end this game will come down to a matter of possessions and the ability the Steelers to rebound from a terrible start. The Steelers being 3-point favorites is a confusing spread based on the win loss records of the teams involved.
