2014 NFL Week 13 - Broncos vs. Chiefs Betting Odds Preview
The 7-3 Chiefs host the 8-3 Broncos on Sunday Night Football. The Chiefs had been playing much better over recent weeks but took a step back with a loss to the last place Raiders. The Raiders had not won a game in 268 days. The Chiefs defense allowed the Raiders to drive and score a late touchdown for a 24-20 lead and then they held the Chiefs offense for the win and a bad loss for Kansas City. The loss snapped the Kansas City 5 game-winning streak and could end up costing the team a spot in the playoffs in a very competitive AFC. Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith had to battle the tough weather conditions that consisted of heavy rain and winds. He finished 20/36 for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Jamal Charles had 19 carries for 80 yards while the offense struggled for most of the night.
The Broncos looked like they would join the Chiefs in the loss column for much of their matchup with the Dolphins, but were able to put together a late rally in order to secure the win. The offensive line protected manning better than they have all season while he went 28/35 for 257 yards and 4 touchdowns. They also run blocked for running back C.J Anderson who had 27 carries for 167 yards and a touchdown. The offense as a whole was completely even with 35 runs and 35 passes in the game. They were in come from behind mode for most of the game thanks to a defense that missed tackles and assignments consistently throughout the game. They did not hold the lead at all until an Anderson touchdown with 5:00 left in the game as they overcame and 11 point fourth quarter deficit. Emmanuel Sanders and Deamarius Thomas combined for 19 catches and 213 yards as both continued their pro bowl seasons. They suffered injuries to cornerback Aqib Talib, Kayvon Webster, and Brandon Marshall and their status for the next game is up in the air.
This should be an interesting game as it means a lot to both teams. Manning and the Broncos are trying to secure home field advantage in the playoffs while the Chiefs are trying to maintain the grip that they currently have on the last wild card spot. The Broncos defense will need to focus its attention to Anderson after allowing such a big game to Anderson last week. Smith is not going to beat a team throwing the ball and if they are able to stop the run they will be able to blitz Smith and force him out of his comfort zone. The Chiefs will need to find a way to put the pressure on Manning while stopping the run. It is a difficult formula to figure out but the only way to stop them when they have the ball. The other way would be for the Chiefs to control the game on the ground so they can control the clock and limit Manning’s time on the field.
