Line: Jets -3

The 2014 New York Jets are supposed to be a team that is returning to its ”ground and pound” philosophy and yet have seen like a team that is trying to become more of a passing team. The blew a big lead in week 2 against the Packers and a lot of that had to do with play calling that asked 2nd year quarterback Geno Smith to make a lot of decisions. The team may want to find a way to get their passing game going but they are going to need to simplify things and not have too many “trick plays” during the course of the game. The Bears are coming off a thrilling 21 point 4th quarter comeback win and can thank virtually all of that to the strength of their passing game. The offense struggled for most of the first 3 quarters, however turned it up big time in the fourth and they were able to avoid an 0-2 start.

The Bears have 2 star receivers in Alshon Jeffrey and Brandon Marshall who came into last week’s game as doubtful due to injury. Both of them played however Jeffrey, who is the deep threat amongst the 2 didn’t get many chances and was clearly playing at much less than 100%. Marshall also started slow but when he made a phenomenal 1 handed catch for his first of 3 touchdowns it gave his team a much-needed score and gave him confidence moving forward. Tight End Martellus Bennett may be the most underrated tight end in the NFL. He caught another touchdown pass this week and provides jay Cutler with a safe and reliable target. The Bears defense will be without star cornerback Charles Tillman for the rest of the season with a torn triceps and they will miss his physical play and veteran leadership.

If the Jets miss the playoffs by one game, their week 2 collapse against the Packers will be the game tat got away. The team is built on defense and it was unable to hold onto a big lead on the road. Without Tilllman the Bears will be a man down in the secondary and have nobody that will be able to matchup with receiver Eric Decker. The team would like to get its prized offseason addition the ball more often and will hopefully find a simple and productive way to make that happen. The Jets weakness on defense is in the secondary and it will certainly be tested by all of the pass catching weapons on the Bears offense. The Jets will need to get a pass rush fro their front seven so they can avoid getting what is a weak secondary exploited.

This is going be a great Monday night game. Both team’s strengths seem to be able to exploit the other team’s weakness’s so it will be a matter of which team makes the proper adjustments. With both team’s at 1-1 this a big game for bot h teams. There is a big difference between being 2-1 and being 1-2!

Pick: Jets -3
