2014 NFL Week 5 - Seahawks vs. Redskins Betting Odds Preview

Line: Seattle -7

Throughout the early portion of this NFL season, the vast majority of the nationally televised prime time games have been blowouts. Based on the Redskins performance last time they took the field vs. the Giants this game has the potential to join the long lists of blowouts. For the Redskins this is a critical game for quarterback Kirk Cousins who was terrible throwing 4 interceptions last time we saw him. He played very well after replacing an injured Robert Griffin III a few weeks back and will need to get on track to give his team a chance to improve on its 1-3 record. The Seattle defense is not the type of defense that one wants to use to get back on track. It is relentless and unforgiving and if the Redskins turn the ball over, the Seahawks are the best in the NFL at turning turnovers into points. The defense will be rested after the bye week and will have even more rest than most teams after Coach Pete Carroll gave his team the entire bye week off. There are some benefits to having a bye this early but one of the huge negatives is that the team will play for the next 13 consecutive weeks.

The Seahawks will have quarterback Russell Wilson under center and anytime he is your teams quarterback you will have a good chance at wining. The last time the Seahawks played was in week 3 against the Broncos in a Superbowl rematch. The Broncos had a late scoring drive that forced the game into overtime where Wilson again displayed that while he may not always produce the gaudiest statistics, he is a pure winner. He rushed for 21 yards and completed 4-6 passes on the overtime’s first possession that was capped off by a 6 yards touchdown run by Marshawn Lynch. They will have to play the game without injured tight end Zach Miller who will be replaced in the starting lineup by Luke Wilson who has all of 1 catches on the season. Lynch has had a fantastic start to the season with 234 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns in as many games.

The Redskins have yet to form an identity under first year head coach Jay Gruden who is likely to have pass catching tight end Jordan Reed back for this game. Running Back Alfred Morris appears to be healthy for the first time in a while and it shows with his 316 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns through 3 games. Look for the Redskins to look to get him going early and often to keep the defense guessing and force the Seahawks front 7 to account for a run. The last thing the Redskins want is Cousins being forced into multiple third and long situations that result into throws against the vaunted Seattle secondary. Other than the last contest the Redskins defense had been amongst the leagues best, look for them to get back on track.

Pick: Seattle -7
