2012 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds

Horse racing fans the 2012 Belmont Stakes have arrived. This Saturday evening the 144th running of the Belmont Stakes is set to electrify and anticipation is high. This year holds a special treat, the horse I’ll Have Another will be vying for the first Triple Crown in 34 years. The Triple Crown is given to any horse who wins the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes races. Never before in the Triple Crown series has there been such a long gap since the last winner. Moreover, in the past 13 years seven horses have come to race at the Belmont after winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes only to fail to take the Crown.

I’ll Have Another is the favored horse to win the contest with odds at 4/5. Jockeyed by Mario Gutierrez, this horse has won its past four races. Hopefully a near disaster earlier this week, when a loose horse broke out into a run on the track and almost hit I’ll Have Another, will not have rattled Gutierrez or the horse. I’ll Have Another will be sitting in the 11 hole to start the race, but only two horses in that starting spot have ever won the Belmont. That’s just fine for the horse’s trainer Doug O’Neill who thinks this position will allow them to feel out the pack, take the lead if things are slow or wait in the back if the pace is fast. Given that only 30 horses have ever been eligible to win the Triple Crown and yet only 11 have ever succeeded, would make a win for I’ll Have Another both spectacular and astonishing.

That the Crown is so difficult to win will advantage the second and third contenders, Dullahan and Union Rags, respectively. Dullahan has odds at 5/1 and Union Rags has been given odds of 6/1. Both of these horses ran the Kentucky Derby but were not entered into the Preakness Stakes in order that they could prepare for the Belmont Stakes. This may very well turn out to be the right decision, less than half of the horses favored to win the Belmont Stakes actually came out on top. Therefore the extra time to prepare may translate into victory. Furthermore, these two horses will also be running out of two of the most winning starting posts in race history.
