The 3-8 Dallas Cowboys travel to Washington to take on the 5-6 Redskins in this week’s Monday night matchup. Dallas is coming off a terrible 33-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers. For the Cowboys it was their 4th loss in their last 5 games. To add injury to insult, Tony Romo re-injured his collarbone and there is no set date for him to return. The Redskins held on for a 20-14 victory over the New York Giants to move them into a tie with the Giants for first place in the NFC East.
Before he was injured Romo really struggled. He completed 11 of 21 passes for 106 yards with 0 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Two of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns. Matt Cassel was his replacement and he was very efficient. He completed 13 of 19 passes for 93 yards and 1 touchdown. Cole Beasley led the way for the receivers as he had 6 receptions for 44 yards and their only touchdown. Dez Bryant only had 2 receptions for 26 yards. The running game was non-existent as they only gained 31 yards on 14 carries. Darren McFadden really struggled as he ran the ball 10 times and only gained 11 yards. The Defense wasn’t much better as they didn’t force any turnovers and only had 1 sack. The lone bright spot was Rolando McClain who had 3 tackles for losses.
Washington played great for 3 quarters as they were leading 17-0 heading into the 4th quarter but only won by the score of 20-14. The Defense was the factor in this game as they intercepted Eli Manning 3 times and had 3 sacks for a loss of 22 yards. They completely shut down the running game as the Giants only had 33 yards on 13 carries. They had trouble covering Odell Beckham Jr. as he had 9 receptions for 142 yards and a touchdown. Kirk Cousins played a good game as he went 20 for 29 for 302 yards and a touchdown with 0 interceptions. The offensive line did a great job protecting him as he was not sacked the entire game. His favorite target was Jordan Reed who had 8 catches for 98 yards. Desean Jackson also had a good game as he caught only 2 passes but one was a 63-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. Alfred Morris led a balanced running game with 78 yards on 23 carries.
The Cowboys are 3-8 against the spread this year including 2-3 on the road. Washington is 5-6 against the spread this year including 4-2 at home. The Redskins are favorites in this game and still have much to play for. Unlike the Cowboys who are out of the playoff race, Washington is tied for first place and has won 3 of their last 5 games with the 2 losses coming to New England and Carolina who combined have 1 loss on the season.
