The 5-7 Giants travel to Miami to take on the 5-7 Dolphins in this week’s Monday night matchup. The Giants suffered their third defeat in a row and their 4th in their last 5 games when they fell 23-20 in overtime to the New York Jets. The blew a 20-10 fourth quarter lead as they were shut out in the second half and committed a bad 4th quarter turnover at the Jets 4 yard line. Miami beat the Baltimore Ravens 15-13 last week despite not scoring a point after half time and the offense only gaining 223 yards.
The Giants couldn’t score or get stops in the second half against the Jets and Eli Manning threw a huge interception in the 4th quarter with the Giants in the red zone. Instead of kicking the field goal on 4th and 2 at the Jets 4 yard line, the Giants went for it and Manning threw the interception, which set up a Jets field goal. Manning finished the day with a passer rating of 80.1 as he completed 18 of 34 passes for 297 yards and a touchdown. The offensive line allowed him to get sacked 3 times for a loss of 16 yards. His favorite target was Odell Beckham Jr. who had another big game with 6 catches for 149 yards and a touchdown. Over the last 5 games Beckham has averaged 125 receiving yards and has caught 6 touchdowns. New York had some trouble running the ball as they gained only 74 yards on 24 carries. Defensively, the secondary had issues as 3 different Jets receivers had over 90 receiving yards and Ryan Fitzpatrick was able to complete over 70 percent of his passes as he was 36 for 50 for 390 yards. The defensive line was able to sack Fitzpatrick 3 times for a loss of 17 yards.
Miami’s passing game struggled as Ryan Tannehill was only able to complete 9 of his 19 passes for 86 yards and 1 touchdown. In fact, the Dolphins scored all 15 of their points within a 2 minute span in the second quarter as they intercepted Matt Schaub 2 plays in a row with the second being returned for a touchdown. There was only 1 Miami receiver who had more than 5 receiving yards and that was Devante Parker who had 3 catches for 63 yards. They had more success running the ball as they gained 137 yards on 26 carries with Lamar Miller leading the way with 113 yards on 20 carries. Defensively, in addition to the 2 interceptions, they also sacked Schaub 3 times for a loss of 27 yards.
The Giants are 6-5-1 against the spread this year including 3-2-1 on the road. The Dolphins are 4-8 against the spread this year and are only 1-4 at home. Both of these teams are still alive in the playoff chase despite records below .500 and although the Dolphins have home field advantage, the spread for this game is even.
