The 3-10 Tennessee Titans travel to New England to take on the 11-2 Patriots on Sunday Afternoon. New England stopped a 2 game losing streak by destroying the Houston Texans last week 27-6 while the Titans were blown out by the Jets 30-8. For Tennessee, this was their 4th loss in their last 5 games. The good news for the Patriots is Rob Gronkowski returned from his injury and contributed right away in their victory over Houston. The bad news is they lost running back LeGarrette Blount for the year when he went down with a hip injury. This is the second Patriot’s running back to be lost for the year as Dion Lewis tore his ACL in week 9.
The Patriots offense was efficient in last week’s win over the Texans. Tom Brady completed over 73 % of his passes as he finished 22 of 30 for 226 yards and 2 touchdowns with 0 interceptions. His favorite target was Rob Gronkowski who had 4 receptions for 87 yards including a 45 yard touchdown early in the first quarter which gave the Patriots a 7-0 lead. LeGarrette Blount led a balance run game before leaving with a knee injury as he gained 53 yards on 10 carries. If there was a negative for the offense it would be they allowed Brady to be sacked 3 times for a loss of 29 yards. Defensively, they limited the Texans to 242 yards of total offense including only 87 rush yards on 22 carries. Malcolm Brown recovered a fumble on the Texans 7 yard line which led a touchdown 3 plays later. They also had 6 sacks for a loss of 57 yards and 8 tackles for losses
Tennessee’s offense struggled so much last week that ironically the only score they had was on a trick play when Marcus Mariota lined up as a receiver and caught a 41 yard touchdown pass. Mariota finished the game with a quarterback rating of 11.7 as he completed 21 of 39 passes for 274 yards with 0 touchdowns and 1 interception. His favorite target was Delanie Walker who had 7 catches for 71 yards. The run game was completely shut down as they only gained 24 yards on 13 carries. Defensively, they allowed the Jets to gain over 440 yards of offense and didn’t force any turnovers. They couldn’t stop the run as the Jets gained 183 yards on 34 carries. They were able to sack Ryan Fitzpatrick once and had 4 tackles for losses.
The Patriots are 6-4-3 against the spread this year including 5-4-3 when they are the favorite. The Titans are 4-8-1 against the spread this year including 4-5 when they are the underdog. While Tennessee has been eliminated from the playoffs this year, New England is still trying to earn home field advantage throughout the playoffs even though they already clicked the AFC East. The Patriots are favored by more than 2 touchdowns in this game and although they have Gronkowski back, they are on their 3rd string running back.
