The 2-4 Seattle Seahawks will travel to San Francisco to take on the 2-4 49ers in this week’s Thursday night matchup. The 49ers are coming off a solid 25-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens and the Seahawks blew a big 4th quarter lead in losing at home for only the second time in 2 years to the Carolina Panthers 27-23. Seattle had a 9 point 4th quarter lead but couldn’t hold it. This is becoming a pattern for Seattle, who has been outscored 61-27 in the 4th quarter and over time this year including 40-3 in the last 3 games. The 49ers snapped a 4 game losing streak as Colin Kaepernick threw for 340 yards which is highest total this season.
Seattle’s defense has ranked at the top of the league for the last few years. This year, they are having major difficulty closing out games. They allowed Carolina to have 4 different drives go for 80 yards and a touchdown including 2 in the last 6 minutes of the game. This comes after they suffered an even worse meltdown in their week 5 loss to the Bengals where they were leading 24-7 heading into the 4th quarter only to allow 20 unanswered points to lose in overtime 27-24. Offensively, Jimmy Graham was their only bright spot this week as he caught 8 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown. Russell Wilson had a decent game going 18/30 for 241 yards a touchdown while also rushing for 53 yards. The offensive line didn’t help him much by allowing the Panthers to sack him 4 times. Marshawn Lynch rushed for his first touchdown of the year but has continued to struggle. He had 17 carries for only 54 yards and on the year has 55 carries for only 182 yards which averages 3.3 yards per carry. That is 1 full yard below his career average of 4.3 yards per carry.
San Francisco got back in the win column by playing solid football on both sides of the ball. The Offense gained over 400 yards and the defense had 2 interceptions and was able to keep the run game in check. The Ravens were limited to 77 rushing yards and Justin Forsett was held to 62 yards on 17 carries after rushing for 150 yards against the Steelers in his last game. The Offense had several big plays including a 76 yard touchdown reception by Torrey Smith, a 52 yard reception by Bruce Miller and a 51 yard reception by Anquan Boldin. Phil Dawson had a great day by making all 4 of his filed goals including a 53 yarder. If there was a negative in this game for San Francisco it is that the offensive line allowed Kaepernick to be sacked 3 times while the defensive line couldn’t sack Flacco once.
This is a home game for San Francisco and they are 3-3 against the spread this year while the Seahawks are 1-4-1 and are coming off 2 straight losses. Seattle is a big favorite in this game but it’s the 49ers who are trending in the right direction.
