The 2-1 Kansas City Chiefs travel to Pittsburgh to take on the 2-1 Steelers after coming off very different weeks. The Steelers were defeated on the road 34-3 by the Philadelphia Eagles but will be getting a big offensive boost with the return of Le’Veon Bell. Bell is back after a 3 game suspension for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. Kansas City ‘s defense dominated in their 24-3 home victory over the New York Jets.
The Steelers offense’s opening drive field goal attempt was blocked in the teams’ worst defeat in the last 27 years. Ben Roethlisberger completed 24-44 of passes for 257 yards, threw 1 interception and lost a fumble. He was also sacked 4 times for a loss of 35 yards. His favorite target was Antonio Brown who caught 12 passes for 120 yards. For Brown, this was a bounce-back game as he had only 4 catches for 39 yards last week. Sammie Coates was second on the team 50 yards on 3 receptions. DeAngelo Williams led a rarely used rush attack with 21 yards on 8 carries. As a team, they gained 29 yards on only 10 carries. Defensively, they gave up over 425 yards as 7 different Eagle receivers had receptions that gained at least 10 yards. They forced 0 turnovers and didn’t record a single sack while totaling 4 tackles for losses.
Kansas City’s defense forced 8 Jet turnovers including 6 interceptions and 2 fumbles while returning one each for a touchdown. Marcus Peters had 2 of the 6 picks, which now marks the second game in a row in which he has had multiple interceptions. They did have some issues, as the Jets were able to gain 117 yards on only 22 runs, which averages out to more than 5 yards per carry. Offensively, Alex Smith was very efficient completing 25 of his 33 passes for 237 yards and touchdown with 0 interceptions. He was sacked two times for a loss of 16 yards. Travis Kelce led the receivers with 6 catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Chris Conley was second on the team with 3 catches for 44 yards. Spencer Ware had 75 of his teams 72 rushing yards as several other rushes were stopped for losses. The team is waiting for the return of Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles who is not quite ready to return from his ACL injury.
With the return of Le’Veon Bell and home field advantage the Steelers are 5-point favorites in this game. Kansas City has gone 1-2 against the spread this season including 0-1 on the road. Pittsburgh is 2-1 against the spread including 1-0 at home. Last weeks loss by the Steelers was surprising because they scored 62 points in their first 2 wins. For the Chiefs, they were playing for the first time after a regular season loss since week 7 of last season and responded very well.
