Week 9 - Denver Broncos vs. Oakland Raiders

The 6-2 Denver Broncos travel to Oakland to take on the 6-2 Raiders in this week’s Sunday night matchup. Both teams scored important wins last week to remain tied atop the AFC West standings. Denver’s defense led the way again with 3 turnovers as the Broncos beat the Chargers 27-19. Derek Carr had a career day throwing for over 500 yards as Oakland defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-24 in overtime. Oakland set an NFL record in this game with 23 penalties for a loss of 200 yards.

Carr finished 40-59 for 513 yards, 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He was sacked twice for a loss of 15 yards and lost a fumble. Ten different Raiders receivers caught passes including Amari Cooper who had 12 catches for 173 yards and a touchdown. Michael Crabtree also had a nice game with 8 catches for 108 yards. Crabtree has 6 touchdown receptions this season, which is tied for the league lead. Latavius Murray led a balanced running game with 48 yards on 11 carries. As a team, they gained 128 yards on only 24 carries, which is more than 5 yards per rush. Overall the Raiders have averaged 401 yards per game this season, which is ranked fifth in the league. Defensively, they allowed 282 yards of offense as they intercepted Jameis Winston twice, sacked him twice and had 7 tackles for losses. They allowed only 1one Buccaneer play to go for more than 20 yards. Over the past 3 games Oakland’s defense has given up only 16 points per game after allowing 28 over their first 5 games.

Trevor Siemian had a mixed day as he threw for 276 yards, 0 touchdowns, 1 interception, and lost a fumble. He also completed passes of at least 30 yards to 4 different Broncos as they averaged 14 yards per reception. Demariyus Thomas led the way with 79 yards on only 5 catches. They really struggled running the ball gaining only 57 yards on 25 carries. Defensively, they intercepted Phillip Rivers 3 times and sacked him 4 times for a loss of 21 yards. They struggled against the rush allowing San Diego to gain 123 yards on just 26 carries. Denver leads the NFL in sacks this season with 26 as Vonn Miller’s 8.5 are good for second in the league. They will be without Pro Bowl cornerback Aqib Talib who is missing his second straight game with a back injury.

Denver has gone 5-2 against the spread this season including 2-1 on the road. Oakland has gone 4-4 against the spread this season including 0-3 at home. The Raiders are favored by 2 points in this game and both of their losses have came at home this season. With a win, Oakland will match their win total from last season. For the Broncos, linebacker Brandon Marshall’s status is questionable after missing last week’s game with a hamstring injury. With first place at stake, you know the Coliseum will be rocking.
