Carolina won its second in a row with an impressive 27-24 victory over the Detroit Lions. The Panthers held on despite allowing 14 unanswered points in the 4th quarter. Cornerback Daryl Worley suffered an Ankle injury and didn’t participate in Tuesday’s practice. His status is questionable for this game. The Panthers have now beaten the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots on the road in back to back weeks.
Cam Newton finished with a quarterback rating of 141 last week completing 26 of 33 passes for 355 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. His favorite target was Ed Dickson who had 5 catches for 175 yards. They struggled with the run as they gained just 28 yards on 28 carries which is an average of 1 yard per carry. Defensively, they limited Detroit to just 279 yards of offense and recovered a Matthew Stafford fumble. They also sacked Stafford 6 times and had 10 tackles for losses. Against the run, they limited the Lions to 50 yards on 15 carries. On the season, Carolina’s defense has given up an average of 19 points and 294 yards per game.
Philadelphia played great last week on both sides with Carsten Wentz having a career day leading the offense. He threw for 304 yards, a career high 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. His favorite target was Zach Ertz who had 6 catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. Nelson Agholor also had a nice game with 4 receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown. They had success running the ball gaining 122 yards on 33 carries. On the season the Eagles offense is ranked third in the league with 398 yards per game, and is ranked 7th with 27.5 points per game. Defensively, they sacked Carsen Palmer twice and forced a turnover with a fumble recovery. They completely shut the Cardinals running game down with allowing just 31 yards on 14 carries.
Both teams will only have 3 days of rest before this matchup and the Panthers are 3.5 point favorites and will have home field advantage. Carson Wentz has been great on third down this year leading the league with 37 completions and 6 touchdown passes on third downs. Both teams have gone 3-2 against the spread this season. The Eagles only loss this season came on the road in week 2 to the Kansas City Chiefs. Their offensive line could be without right tackle Lane Johnson who was placed in concussion protocol during last week’s game and his status is for this contest is still up in the air.
