London 2012 Olympics - USA Men's Basketball - Quarter Finals

Russia vs. Lithuania – 2pm London Time

These two teams have not yet faced each other at the London 2012 Olympics. Russia made it to the Quarters by way of four wins and one loss while Lithuania lost three games and only won two. To Lithuania’s credit they had a more difficult schedule than Russia. Lithuania had to face three of the top teams entering the tournament (USA, Argentina and France), and those losses were not blow outs by any means. Russia did beat Spain who is considered a top contender this year making their 4-1 qualifying round record respectable. Russia is the favorite here with a -350 Moneyline, a 7-point spread and 154 ½ over/under. Russia has averaged about 80 points a game while Lithuania has averaged 79 points a game.

France vs. Spain – 3:15 London Time

This should be a very competitive game as both teams came into the tournament highly rated and eager to prove themselves. France’s only loss in the Group Stage was a humbling defeat to the USA 98-71; but France had good showings against other quarter finalists Argentina and Lithuania. Spain on the other hand was humbled by Brazil and Russia. That said, Spain is favored in the odds to win this game with a -275 Moneyline, a 7-point spread and an over/under of 151 ½. The odds are likely with Spain due to the huge height advantage they possess over the relatively short French team. The Gasol brother and Serge Ibaka will figure into Spain’s game plan in a big way. Also, going into the Quarter Finals, Spain is now the second odds favorite to win the tournament behind the USA.

Brazil vs. Argentina – 8pm London Time

The Brazil-Argentina game will be the hottest contest of the Quarter Finals. The point spread is only 3 ½, the over/under is 158 ½. Argentina lost its first Group Stage game to the USA which is no surprise but what is a surprise is that it lost a low scoring game to France 71-66. Otherwise Argentina has been putting up over 90 points each game and over 100 points in their last game against Lithuania who played the USA very hard. Thus it isn’t too much of a surprise that Argentina is the marginal favorite to win this game but the Moneyline is only -160 for Argentina.

USA vs. Australia – 10:15pm London Time

Everyone knows that team USA is the team to beat and the clear favorite to win gold. With the exception of a close game with Lithuania, USA has put on a show against ever other opponent. The US will be the favorite to win this game (likely you will not even get a Moneyline on this game) so the interesting wagers will be the point spread and the over/under. Current point spread is 33 ½ while the over/under is 188 ½. US has averaged 117.8 points per game to Australia’s 82 per game. That would suggest the over bet is reasonable but keep in mind the US is unlikely to push to full strength this game saving themselves for better opponents later on. Point spread is also a tempting bet as Australia’s defence, aided by a height set comparable to the USA’s, has kept its opponents to 74.6 points per game; slightly better than that of Team USA. A spread below 33 ½ is entirely possible.
