New York Giants vs. Caroline Panthers Betting Odds Preview - NFL Week 3

The Week Three Thursday night game will feature the New York Giants and the Carolina Panthers. Both teams are 1-1 coming into this game and both teams are coming off Week Two wins. Coming into the season the defending champion Giants were touted as stars but faltered in Week One against Dallas before beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41-34. New York is the favorite coming into this week’s matchup with Carolina but not by much and for good reason. Meanwhile Carolina had a Week One loss to Tampa Bay 16-10 but upset the Saints last weekend to take the game 35-27.

Taking Tampa Bay as a point of reference it would seem as though this will be a close game. The odds are favoring the Giants by a narrow margin with a spread of 1 point and an over/under of 51.5 points. A narrow margin makes sense in this game but just 1 point does not. There is usually one game a week that finishes with a 1 point difference and the bookies have about three games with a 1 point spread this week. More likely Houston-Denver or Jacksonville-Indianapolis will be closer than this game. A high scoring game is possible, as both teams seem to have their offenses in gear despite injuries.

The Giants will be hurt the most by injuries this week: Domenik Hixon (WR, Concussion), Ahmad Bradshaw (RB, Neck), Prince Amukamara (CB, Ankle), Michael Coe (CB, Hamstring), and Keith Rivers (LB, Hamstring). All of those players are questionable or out for this Week Three game. This is going to have a huge impact on New York’s ability to live up to their potential. That said, their offensive line is healthy and Andre Brown could once again step in for injured Ahmad Bradshaw just as he did on Sunday against the Bucs. Brown, a four year veteran of the league, scored his first NFL touchdown last Sunday and aided his team to a win with a 71-yard rushing day. The Panther’s only concern is wide receiver Steve Smith who has been slowed by an ankle injury but has been playing through it having 3 catches for 104 yards against the Saints.

As for the over/under, the odds makers probably have this one pretty close. New York has allowed an average of 29 points per game and Carolina 21.5. There’s a total of 50.5 points right there. If you’re picking here consider going under on the thought that the Giants could be slowed down by injuries. The Giants for the win is still a good bet, they have averaged more points scored than the Panthers and seemed unabated by the loss of Bradshaw last weekend. On defense these teams have been about equal on yards surrendered but New York is slightly better against the run. Given Carolina’s higher propensity to run the ball when compared to the Giants would seem important this week.

These two teams do not meet very often; when they have they’ve split the last six meetings three-a-piece. Usually there’s at least a touchdown difference. The Giants have generally been considered a stronger team this year but Carolina is coming on strong, a Panther’s win would make a big statement.
