UFC 147 - Silva vs. Franklin II Betting Odds
It has been three years since Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva faced off. That match ended in a victory for Franklin by way of decision after three rounds. At UFC 147 these two fighters will go at it again in Brazil. Rich Franklin will have a two inch reach advantage and holds a better UFC record but this will be his first fight after rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Wanderlei Silva is 2-1 since losing to Franklin and most recently knocked out Cung Le at UFC 139.
Rich Franklin is a dangerous head striker with plenty of power. In fact he has won more than half his fights by knockout. Standing up Franklin will hit near two strikes to his opponent’s one and with his reach advantage in this fight that ability will be an asset. Both fighters are known to be great strikers but Franklin also has the edge in strike defense. Where Silva does having the striking advantage is in power and knockdowns; he has 24 career knockdowns.
A submission after takedown is unlikely from either fighter. Each fighter has only one career submission. On the ground these two will be fairly even but if there is an edge give it to Franklin because he will probably work harder than Silva. Silva will have the clear advantage from the clinch. During the last fight between these two, Silva had 17 strikes from the clinch to Franklin’s 6. Franklin has been weak against other fighters in the clinch so Silva will likely try to get there.
Another advantage in Silva’s favor is the locale. Brazilian fighters have won 10 of the last 12 UFC fights in Brazil when facing foreigners. Silva was training for a fight against Vitor Belfort until Belfort had to bow out to a hand injury. Franklin, on the other hand, was recently cleared to compete by doctors after his shoulder surgery but has not fought in 506 days. The Moneyline is -170 for Franklin and +140 for Silva.
Werdum vs. Russow
The Fabricio Werdum versus Mike Russow fight at UFC 147 will be a launching point to the top of UFC heavyweight division for whichever fighter can come out on top. Werdum spent some time in the UFC before losing to current UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos. While fighting in Strikeforce, Werdum went 3-1 and was given a second shot at the UFC 143. His win by unanimous decision against Roy Nelson got him this fight. Russow has been in the UFC for three years and has a UFC record of 4-0 (15-1 career). Russow hasn’t had any stand out fights and many are expecting this to be a tough fight for him. But again, the winner will likely be looked at for a title shot as Werdum is widely considered to be among the top five heavyweights.
Look for Werdum to try to get this fight into the clinch where his knees are devastating. Werdum likely has the edge in striking, here Russow often seems vulnerable and slow to the defense. But if this fight gets to the ground then edge to Russow with his superb wrestling skill that will surely overcome Werdum’s jiu-jitsu submission skills. Don’t count Russow out even if the fight seems to be going tough for him, he has knocked out two fighters in his four UFC fights. The Moneyline has this fight -500 for Werdum and +350 for Russow.
