July 30, 2008 - The NFL New Orleans Saints have signed 1st round pick DT Sedrick Ellis for a reported $49M 5 year deal with contract guarantees fo $19.5M. The deal ends the holdout for the seventh overall pick in the 2008 draft. Ellis was drafted to shore up the centre of the defensive line for the Saints who have two quality DE in Charles Grant and Will Smith.
Sedrick Ellis was Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year in 2007. The All-American from Southern California in 2007 had 58 tackles, 121/1 tackles for losses and 81/2 sacks in 13 games. Ellis is 6-2, 305 lbs and impressed coaching staff in mini-camp. Ellis is the last Saints draft pick to sign. The Saints are fairly optimistic for the 2008 NFL Season and have recently acquired TE Jeremy Shockey through a trade.
